What is Man?
David was a deep thinker. He contemplated many things and wrote about them in his psalms. Much of what he wrote came in the context of his prayers to God, in which he had conversations with his Lord about the thoughts of his mind and the feelings of his heart. As David considered the heavens which the Lord had made with His fingers, he wondered what was man that God would take thought of him and care for him. (Psalm 8:4,5) That is a great subject for all of us to consider.
Man is small and inglorious compared to the moon and the stars which fill the expanse of the universe. Man's life in the physical world lasts only a fraction of the length of all of God's solar system. However, as limited as is man, we have a great advantage over the rest of God's creation. We were all made in the image of God. Therefore, we are like Him, so that we can relate to God in ways that all of the other creatures can't. Also, because of God's love, He cares about each of us, and He desires for us to live with Him in heaven for eternity. That is why He sent Jesus to die for us, which was the greatest act of love of all time. It is why God gave us meaning in life by making us have dominion over His world in which He placed us. He wants us, as His highest creation, to have an abundant life that comes from knowing Him and living each day under His care and guidance. Hopefully, when we contemplate this, as David did, we will see our worth in God's plan and our utter dependence upon His love and salvation.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 9-11.
