Following the Lord

A disciple of Jesus follows Him faithfully each day. It is a matter of faith, but it is a faith that includes commitment and surrender. David knew this type of following. (Psalm 16:8) We can learn two important principles from this verse. Once we learn them, it is up to us to make them a priority in our daily lives, so we can follow Jesus well.

David knew that he had to "set the Lord continually before me." In other words, he had to follow the Lord closely. The truth is that the Lord Jesus does not have to follow us, but we must decide to follow Him each step of the way, continually. This is a commitment. We do not go our own way; we do not stop following Him at any point; we are glued to Jesus 24/7. Also, David said, "Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken." The right hand represents our own strength. Therefore, if Jesus is ahead of us on our right side, it shows we are depending on Him to be our Strength and Protector. We will not try to solve our problems and defeat our enemies by our power and intellect, but we will surrender to Him and allow Him to guide us and empower us to defeat any and all enemies. That is the result and the benefit of fully following Jesus continually.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 18-20.
