Job's Response
Even though Job had been waiting quite a while for his opportunity to present his case to God, once God had questioned him, he had nothing to say. His only remark was a solemn confession. (Job 40:3,4) I believe we would all have a similar response, if we were ever confronted by God.
Job's confession was, "Behold, I am vile." That is true for all of us. Compared to God, we are not just sinful, we are vile. God is so perfect and powerful. We are so impure and weak. Our righteousness is like filthy rags. God is completely righteous and holy. When we see God, we always see ourselves as so inferior to Him, even though we are one of His children. We should simply bow and worship the One who is holy!
Job had no answer, so he laid his hand over his mouth. He was totally humbled by God's wisdom, and he was very wise to close his mouth with his hand. We can add nothing to God's words, and we can't answer His questions about His creation. We have a wondrous brain that He has given us, but our knowledge is so inferior. We need to close our mouths and open our ears, so that we do not miss one word He has for us.
God loved Job, and He was teaching him some things that we can only learn from pain. God did not mean to harm Job permanently, but He did want to make a point. God does the same thing to us, when we are quick to speak and slow to hear. We must always remember that we should be slow to speak and quick to hear.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Job 42 and Psalm 1-2.
