A Refuge in Times of Trouble

How many of us have troubles? All of us have troubles, from the poorest to the richest, and from the youngest to the oldest. Troubles are a part of life on earth. Some people pray that God will take away all of their troubles. He never promised to do that. He promised to be a refuge for the oppressed and a refuge in times of trouble. (Psalm 9:9) I believe many of us have missed this key truth.

God does not always deliver the oppressed. Yes, He does send deliverance sometimes, and that is a great blessing. However, He is always a refuge for those who are oppressed, so that even as their oppression continues, they can find rest and contentment in the security of the Lord. This is true for those imprisoned for their faith or those who are persecuted for Christ's sake. God may not end the suffering, but we can have our rest in Him.

In fact, God does not remove troubles every time we ask. He leaves them sometimes, so we will be encouraged to take refuge in Him. That way we see His power in the midst of the storms of life, not just in the calm times. Please, do not get upset with God when He does not take the troubles away. Get excited, because He is always our refuge so we can go to Him at any time to get comfort and strength to bear the troubles of life and be victorious like Jesus.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalm 10-13.
