Why do You Honor your Sons more than Me?

God was very upset with Eli, the priest at Shiloh. Eli's sons were very wicked by stealing meat from the sacrifices and being sexually immoral. Eli told them to stop, but when they did not listen to him, he did not do anything else. He even ate the stolen meat with them. Therefore, God asked him why he would honor his sons more than he honored God. (I Samuel 2:29) We need to make sure we never do this same thing today.

Of course, we should love our children, and we should seek to have godly families who worship and serve the Lord. We fail to do this when we honor our children more than God by giving them their way, when it is not according to God's will. Also, if we condone their sin, because we love them, that is not a godly love. We must set the example for them. We must be willing to say no and to do whatever it takes to show them God's will and to stop them from sinning. God has given us that responsibility as parents. The children do not know how to choose when they are young, and if they still don't know when they are older, we must take the initiative to correct them in love, as we should do to anyone else we see engaging in sin.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Samuel 3-5.
