Our Kinsman Redeemer

Naomi rejoiced in the Lord to hear that her daughter-in-law, Ruth, had found her way to glean in the field of Boaz, a very close relative of her late husband. She realized that the close relative could deliver them out of their nearly hopeless situation of being two widows with no one to take care of them. (Ruth 2:20) We should rejoice in the Lord, too, because we have a Kinsman Redeemer, Jesus.

In the Old Testament the closest relative of a man who died was supposed to take his wife, so he could bear children to carry on the family name. Also, he was to inherit the land, so that it would stay in the family. That is what Boaz could do, and what He did for Ruth's husband. It was a huge blessing, which resulted in Boaz and Ruth being ancestors of Jesus Christ.

All of us are in a nearly hopeless situation because of our sins. Our only hope is to have a Kinsman Redeemer to come to our rescue. That is why Jesus left heaven to become man. He became our close relative, so that He could redeem us by dying on the Cross for our sins. He never ceased being God, but He had to be a man, too, to die for us and shed His blood. As we prepare for Easter, please, remember to thank Jesus for becoming our Kinsman Redeemer.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Ruth 3-4 and I Samuel 1-2.
