God Never Forgets His Children
I have heard numerous people say that they felt like God had forgotten them. If they belonged to the Lord, that could never happen. God assured the people of Judah of this in the Old Testament, and we can be assured of it today. (Isaiah 49:15,16) He uses one of His best word pictures to drive home this comforting truth.
The Lord asked His people a question, "Can a woman forget her nursing child and not have compassion on the son of her womb?" If you have ever been around a lady who has had a nursing child, this question almost seems absurd. That new mother is so bonded to that child that she hears every whimper, even from the next room. She would never fail to care for her child in the most tender and attentive way. There is just a special connection between the mother and her child. However, God used this picture to assure them of His love for them. He said, "Surely, they may forget, yet, I will not forget you." God loves us more than a nursing mother loves her child, and He is more attentive to our needs than a new mother, so that we can be assured of His constant watch-care over us.
In fact, He went one step further, we are inscribed on the palms of His hands, so that we are continually before Him. By writing us on His hands, we are never out of His sight or out of His care. Of course, God, the Father, does not have hands, but this is a way that we can relate to how much He cares for us. It is like a person writing a phone number on his or her hand, so they would never forget to call. God will never forget His children. What a wonderful Lord we have!
Tomorrow, I intend to read Isaiah 50-52.
