He Wholly Followed the Lord
Caleb was a very unique individual in history. I know I have written about him before, but his life was so amazing it is good for us to consider him again today. Caleb wholly followed the Lord, and God blessed him in a wonderful way because of that. Joshua was able to give him the area around Hebron 45 years after he had gone in to spy out the land.(Joshua 14:9,14) God is so good to those who are true to Him.
Caleb was 40 years old when he spied out the land. Then, they wandered in the wilderness for 40 more years before entering the land of Canaan under Joshua. Then, they spent 5 years subduing the Canaanites in the central and southern part of the land. Finally, Joshua was able to cast lots to separate all of the land to the tribes of Israel. Caleb was given the mountains around Hebron where the giants still lived. However, he was up to the task by trusting God, and he was successful in his conquest.
How did this happen? Caleb wholly followed the Lord, so that his strength was as great at 85, as it had been at 40. Remember, Moses said pretty much the same thing about his life. That was a blessing of God. Even though Caleb was out-voted by 10 other spies and the people, he wholly followed the Lord. As he wandered in the wilderness through no fault of his own, he wholly followed the Lord. When they finally went into Canaan to attack Jericho and Ai and the other cities, he wholly followed the Lord. Through all of that God was faithful to sustain and strengthen Caleb, because of his complete trust in the Lord. How do you think Caleb felt when he sat in his home in Hebron at 85+ years old? I believe he would have told anyone who would listen to him that it is always a blessing to wholly follow the Lord, no matter what happens. I pray we all will learn that lesson well.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Joshua 15-17.
