My Father's Business

I would imagine that most of us are familiar with the story of Jesus' trip to Jerusalem with his family at age 12 for the Passover. However, I am not sure we have fully thought about His response to His earthly parents when they found Him at the Temple speaking with the teachers.(Luke 2:49) Yes, we know that He told them He had to "be about My Father's business," but what are the implications of that for us today? Let's think about it a little.

Jesus is God who became man, so that He could show us the Father, live, a sinless life of service, die on the cross for the sins of the world, and then, rise again to prove His identity before returning bodily to heaven. At age 12 He already knew He was here to carry out the will of God, and He was committed to making sure He knew the Word of God and He did God's business of redemption. His entire focus was on accomplishing that, and He did it all very well. The Father exalted Jesus because of that, and He gave Him a name above all names, that all people will confess that He is Lord!

As believers, we are to be like Jesus. The only way to be like Jesus is to be about the Father's business. This is not just for full-time ministers and missionaries. It is not just for those called to some church vocation. If we are a child of God, we should be about the Father's business. Yes, we must do it in His power, since we can't do it by ourselves. However, if we focus on accomplishing the part of the business He has set apart for us, we can do it and do it well. Then, in the end we will hear, "Well done, good, and faithful servant."

The Christian life is about the Father's business. Please, don't miss what God has for you. It is the most glorious way to live and to prepare for eternity.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Luke 3-5.
