God's Word is Eternal
We need to focus on things that are eternal, instead of focusing on things that are passing away. Wouldn't you agree with that? Why spend the majority of our time, energy, and money on things that will not be around forever, when there are things that are eternal? People are eternal. All of us will exist forever. When we leave this world, we will either live with the Lord in Heaven, or we will live in Hell. Should we not invest our lives to see as many people as possible come to know the Lord and have eternal life? All that we see in the sky and on this earth will pass away, too. It is short-sighted to invest in these things. However, God's Word will not pass away.(Mark 13:31) It must be taken seriously as the basis for our lives, if we are going to accomplish eternal things. Let's consider this truth.
Many people read the words of famous people from history that have lasted for 2,000 years or more. In High School I translated the words of Julius Caesar. In college I translated the words of Aristotle and Herodotus. They have some good things to say, but they are dated. They contain some truth, but they are imperfect. We can see now that they did not have a full understanding of truth. However, God's Word never fades. The truth of God's Word is perfect. When we learn God's Word, we are seeing God's perspective, and God is eternal. What better way to prepare for eternity than to read the Words of the Eternal God of the Universe? He gave us His Word to show us things that we can't know from any human perspective.
When I consider this verse, it gives me even more incentive to read God's Word on a daily basis. It reminds me of what Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." The bread is temporal, but the words are eternal. The bread will feed us for a short time. The words of God will feed our souls for eternity.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Mark 15-16 and Luke 1-2.
