These Calamities

I wonder what calamities David was having when he was inspired to write Psalm 57? I guess they could have been huge disasters or small hindrances. We won't ever know that, but we do know what he did when he had calamities in His life.(Psalm 57:1) David had determined to stay close to the "shadow" of God's wings. What a powerful word picture he gives us. We need to explore it this morning.

We all need God's mercy. We have all failed and come short of what God desires for us. We have all sinned in various ways, even though we love Him. We all need to know He still loves us and that we can run to Him in those times we suffer calamities. David knew that we are like little defenseless chicks who gather close to their mother's wings, so that at the slightest sign of trouble, she can shelter them under her wing by holding them close to her heart. That is what God wants to do for all of His children, but we must stay close. We must depend on His mercy and love. We must wait on Him continually, as we wait for the calamities to pass by.

What are "these calamities" for you right now? Have you prayed for mercy? Have you drawn close to God in prayer and by reading His Word? Are you trusting Him fully all through the day? Are you assured that He cares for you so much? That is the security that we all can have in Him.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 60-63.
