God's Promise to Sustain the Righteous

Psalm 55:22 contains a powerful promise. If we simply read it for face value, I believe, we could miss part of what it is saying. We could think that God is not keeping His promise to us. Let's make sure we don't do that.

God's sustaining power is for those who cast their burdens on the Lord. Sometimes that is easier said than done. When we cast a burden on the Lord, we have to give it to Him and leave it with Him. Our tendency is to say we give it to Him, but then, we take it back. We begin to try to help Him out. We work on things with our own power and intellect. I do not believe God promises to sustain us, if we take back the burden, or if we do not give it to Him in the first place.

Also, God's promise is for the righteous never to be moved. God will sustain the righteous, those who know Him and are doing His will. If we do not know Him, or if there is a known sin in our lives, God can permit burdens, and He can refuse to sustain us. He wants us to turn to Him by allowing the problem or giving us the problem. If we desire God's sustaining power, we have to ask the Spirit to search our hearts for sins, and then, confess them, so that we are right before God. If the burden is connected to a sin, only then will God sustain us or remove it.

Finally, we must remember Job. God sustained Job, but it was very grueling for a while before the deliverance and blessing came. Job had his life, and that was it. At times, we must be thankful to the Lord for simply having breath and a heartbeat. We must cast the burdens on Him and wait to see what His sustaining power has in store for us.

See what I mean? God's sustaining power is available to us, but it is not automatic. I pray that each of us will truly experience this power on a continuing basis in our lives.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 56-59.
