The Service of Song in the House of the Lord
What would life be like without music? How would worship be different without music? I believe music adds essential elements to our worship of the Lord. That is why King David appointed men to serve in the Tabernacle and the Temple as the ministers of music.(I Chronicles 6:31) Consider how music has enriched your relationship with God.
Music enables us to express praise to the Lord for His perfections in a glorious and worthy way. The song has both the tune and the lyrics, so that the combination brings out emotions and the facts about the Lord. Our hearts are touched deeply when a true minister of music sings a song of worship or leads the congregation in songs of worship.
We have all heard a choir lift us to the throne of God, too. Solomon's Temple had a huge choir. Sometimes, it was split in two sections to sing different parts and respond in song back and forth. The majesty of many voices joined together in harmony reminds us of the very voice of God booming out from His throne in Heaven.
We have all memorized many truths of the Word of God by learning songs. The brain remembers better when truths are set to music. We learn the alphabet by singing "The ABC's." We learn the Bible by singing God's Word. David was used by God to record God's inspired Word in the many psalms or songs God's Spirit wrote on his heart. Our songs today are not inspired in the same way, but they are spoken by God onto the hearts of ministers of music, so that we can sing and learn in our worship.
I am sure you can come up with many more ways that music blesses you in your walk with God. There is no doubt we would be much poorer without it. I praise God and thank Him often for those in our church family who have been called to the service of song in the house of the Lord. I look forward to their service each week. I know we could all say the same thing.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Chronicles 9-11.
