Our Motivation for Doing What is Right

Why do you do what you do? That is a very important question for each of us to ask ourselves on a regular basis. Let me tell you something that essential for us to know when it comes to motivation. If we do what we do because of another person, then, someone else can come along and talk us out of it. However, if we do what we do because of the Lord, no human being can talk us out of it. King Joash is a great example of this.(II Chronicles 24:2) He did right because of Jehoiada, the priest, but when Jehoiada died, others came and swayed him to do the wrong thing.

Do you go to church because of your friends? Then, when your friends change, you will probably stop going to church. Do you read your Bible and pray because the preacher tells you to? If that is your motivation, other things will come up, so that you fail in you devotional time. If you are good because of a family member, like a child doing what his or her parents say, then, when the child is away from the parents, they will be easily swayed to begin to do the wrong things. It is just that simple. We must do the right thing, because we know it is God's will, so that we do it out of love for Him and faith in Him.

I pray that we will all stop to ask ourselves about our motivation for doing what is right, and that we will make sure we are not doing it because of people or other wrong reasons. That will lead to us doing wrong things in the future. Let's all decide to follow what the Lord says out of love and faith. Then, we will consistently do the right thing forever.

Tomorrow, I intend to read II Chronicles 25-27.
