Sleep Walking

It is easy to be lulled to sleep by the culture around us and to start living like everyone else, even though we are to be like Christ. Paul saw that in his day, and he issued a warning in Ephesians 5:15-16. We need to heed his warning. We must not be sleep walking, but we must be fully awake and watching how we live.

The Bible calls our life, our walk. That is a good analogy. Just like walking is taking one step at a time, life is a series of steps. We must choose our steps wisely or we could fall down or run into something that would harm us or others with us. Think about getting up at night when you are not fully awake and the room is dark. There is a lot of danger. It is even worse if we walk in our sleep. We are not seeing well, and we are not thinking about what is around us. That is how some Christians live. They are walking in darkness, not shining the light of God's Word on all they do, so they end up doing the wrong things.

Instead, we must turn on the light. We must intentionally wake up, allow the Spirit to lead us, and we must follow the light of God's Word in all we do. As we are walking we are careful to look around and see the dangers around us and avoid them.

At the same time, we redeem the time by doing the right things, instead of doing the wrong things. To redeem means to buy something. When we buy time, we use it for God's purposes, and He makes something good. When we use our time for the wrong things, it is lost, and nothing good will ever come of it.

Let's not live foolishly, like those who don't know the Lord and understand the truth. Let's live as wise people, who see everything clearly, just like God sees things. We can do that when we stop sleep walking, wake up and turn on the Light to show us His way. Read Ephesians 4 and 5. There is a lot of light in those two chapters to show us all how to walk carefully.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Ephesians 6 and Philippians 1-2.
