Restoring Our First Love for Jesus

One of the easiest things in life is to fall out of love. I know this is contrary to the way most people think, but most people have the wrong view of love. Love is a choice. It is a decision to put another person before us. We decide to care for another person. The decision might be based on looks, which is not a good reason to decide to love another person. However, we can decide initially to love someone based on physical attraction, but it has to progress to something much deeper for the love to last. If we stop putting the other person first, and we start doing what we want for ourselves, forgetting about the other person, our love will fade. That is how it is with our love for Jesus, too.(Revelation 2:4,5) There are things that can be done to restore our first love for another person or for Jesus.

Remember what your love was like and how you decided to love Jesus. Take time to reflect on your first quality of love for Him right after you received Him as Lord and Savior. If you entered into a love relationship with Jesus, you should have had a period of intense desire to love Him and serve Him out of love and appreciation for Him saving you and changing you.

Repent of the fact that you do not love Him like you did at first. Repent means to change your mind. Decide to love Him and to put Him first in all you do. Put His commands and His desires ahead of your own.

Redo the first works, the things you did when you first met Jesus. The key to love is the decision to put the other person first. How did you do that when you were first saved? Do those things again. The feeling of love will return after you start doing the first works again. Love is not a feeling, but the feelings follow the works.

This Christmas, let's all make sure we love Jesus more now than we ever have. If there is a problem, and we do not have our first love for Him or even more, then, do whatever it takes to restore your first love. This is true for individuals and for churches. Also, these same truths apply to our love for people. Apply them, if you see your first love waning for your family and friends. It will change your life dramatically.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Revelation 6-9.
