Having an Eternal Perspective

Yesterday I saw a rainbow in the clouds right after a rain. It was beautiful to behold, but it also reminded me of God's promise not to flood the earth again like He did in Noah's day. However, it served as a reminder that the next time God will destroy everything by fire, so that all of the heavens and the earth will be dissolved.(II Peter 3:11) Then, God will make a new heavens and a new earth that are without the effects of sin. Think about this reality for a minute.

We must not have a materialistic attitude about life. Everything material will be burned up. Nothing will be left. Therefore, what lasting good does all of that stuff do? The truth is that it is all temporary. God wants us to focus on the eternal and not on what is temporary. It is easy to be materialistic at Christmas. What a shame, though. We miss the significance of Christ's birth if all we see is material things. Christ came to set us free from sin and to make us holy. In order to be truly holy, we have to be set apart from the things of this sinful world and be focused on being like Jesus.

Keep in mind that everything you see will be dissolved, but everything you are will last. Your greatest possession is not material. Your greatest possession is godliness. If you do not have godliness, you are eternally poor.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I John 1-3.
