Keeping the Sabbath Holy
I believe people in America today do not have the right concept of the Sabbath. It seems that as a whole people think that if they go to a worship service on Saturday or Sunday, they have kept the Sabbath. However, that is not in line with many passages in the Bible.(Isaiah 58:13,14) The Sabbath is supposed to be a holy day, set apart for the Lord. It is for our good, because our Creator knows that we need one day out of seven each week to focus on Him and to rest.
Also, some people feel that it is a part of the Law of the Old Covenant, so we don't need to do what the Old Testament says about the Sabbath. However, I would point out that God put the Sabbath observance in the Ten Commandments. Is there any of the other nine that you think ought to be redone or done away with? Then, why are we doing it to the Sabbath?
I believe an attitude of personal preference has invaded our Christianity. We have a consumer attitude about Christianity, so we feel like we can shop around and find the brand of church and Christian life that fits our preference. Is that making Jesus Lord of all? Is that a life of faith, or are we simply practicing a religion, when Jesus came to call us into a relationship with Him as Lord of our lives.
God took one day to rest after He created the universe in six days. He did not need to rest, but He was making an eternal point for us. We do need the rest, and we need to stay focused on Him each week. If we do what we want on the Sabbath, it is much easier to do it all week long and to miss living a life of faith by obeying His commands and following His principles.
Please, be careful to remember the Sabbath to keep it holy. God will bless your life richly if you will.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Isaiah 59-61.
