The Adulterer Lacks Understanding
People are good at making sin seem right. We can justify just about any sin, if that is what we want to do. Committing adultery is one such case. However, it is never right, and it is never the wise thing to do.(Proverbs 6:32,33) In fact, the person who commits adultery does damage to his or her life that will never be taken away.
God instituted marriage between a man and a woman before creating any other human institution. He made it clear from the beginning that it was a permanent relationship, when he said that they would be "glued" together and become "one flesh." Any time that union is broken by having a relationship with another person, God's design is attacked, and He makes sure there are serious consequences. Solomon tells us that the soul is destroyed. I do not think that means the person goes to hell for that sin, but it means the mind, the will, and the emotions are wrecked, so that a total restoration must occur to get them back to God's intention. Also, there are wounds, dishonor, and reproach that will not be wiped away. God knows, and He will not forget to punish this one. He may forgive the sin, but He will cause serious consequences to follow, so that it will never be contemplated again without the person knowing just how devastating it is to them and others.
Unfortunately, we live in a day of adultery and fornication. It is common because understanding is rare. People are walking around with wounds and dishonor, thinking they are normal parts of life. Somehow, we who know the Lord must see the gravity of the situation and share Jesus with them. We must not condemn them or expect them to know better, until the come to know the Lord Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit. If it is a believer who falls into these sins, we must approach them in love to show them the damage they are doing and call them to repentance. If we fail to show God's way for marriage, our society will continue to destroy itself by the break down of the family.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Proverbs 9-11.
