The Fiscal Cliff and the Reign of Christ
I do not know if we will go over the fiscal cliff or not. I know it has a lot of people concerned, so we will hear a lot about it the next few days. Hopefully, the leaders of our country can overcome their disagreements and do what is best for our country. However, it seems that the history of the world points to the fact that men can't rule themselves well at all. The selfishness, pride, and greed take over. The debt and problems pile up. The government collapses, and someone comes in to start over. One day all of that will be over, because Jesus will come back to reign over all the kingdoms of this world.(Revelation 11:15) That is really what we should be talking about, not the fiscal cliff.
People want to know how much they will be paying in taxes next year. They are focused on healthcare and retirement. Will property values go back up? Will the economy revive? Can I afford a big screen TV and an I-pad? All of these questions and many others show us that most people are thinking about the wrong things. The kingdoms of this world come and go. It has happened for thousands of years. Change is the only constant in this world. However, when Jesus comes back to reign, all of that will end. His kingdom is forever. I think we should be preparing to live under His rule, whether it is here in the this world or in heaven. That is what is essential. If you starve to death next year because we have a depression, and there is no food, where will you spend eternity? That is more important than the fiscal cliff. Either Jesus will come or you will die before too long, so the pressing question is, "Do you know Him as King of your life?" Only those who know Him will be with Him for eternity in an unchanging, perfect heaven. There will be no elections or fiscal cliffs there. Until then, we need to keep our eyes on Him and point as many people as possible to the Lord and King of the universe, Jesus Christ.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Revelation 12-14.
