God Doesn't Move, We Do
Jeremiah was an amazing prophet. He was a young man when he started his preaching because God had set him apart for that ministry even before he was born. He had a strong message for Israel and for Judah. One of the first themes in the book is backsliding.(Jeremiah 3:22) Some people think this is an old-fashioned word. It isn't really an old-fashioned word, because it is a Bible word, and the Bible never gets old. It is a word we need to grasp.
When we come to know the Lord, we have to decide to trust Him every day, and to walk with Him. God is steady. He is holy. He never changes. He never moves. However, we can drift from Him. When we do, we are always going backwards. We never drift closer to Him and His will. That takes our choice and our commitment. When we drift, we get farther away from Him. We usually try to convince ourselves that we are doing just fine. We rationalize that our new position is OK. However, it is sin, and we need to decide to confess that sin and return to God. It is only when we are walking right next to Him in His will that we are right with Him. It can't be 90% His way and 10% our way. That means we slid back 10%. The sliding back is such a slippery slope that soon the 10% becomes 20% or 30%. We can't decide to just stay a short distance from God. Satan is too good at leading us back to our ways and the ways of this world.
Watch out for backsliding. A Christian can't live like they did before they got saved. That is backsliding. It shows a lack of faith. It is making us lord, instead of Jesus. Read what Jeremiah says. It is graphic. I can't even ues his language here because of the young people who read this. However, God put it that way, because we need to see the danger of backsliding and determine never to let it happen to us.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Jeremiah 4-6.
