We Are Dust

Let me help your self-esteem this morning. Remember, we are dust.(Psalm 103:13,14) That's right, dust. We are made up of what you wipe off of your furniture every so often. Doesn't that make you feel powerful and important? It should because it keeps life in perspective. Genesis 2:7 tells us that "God formed man of the dust of the ground." Then, after their fall into sin, God told Adam, "For dust you are, and to dust you shall return."(Genesis 3:19b) The Almighty God fashioned you out of dust, so that you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Who else could make such a complex body out of dust? No one could do that but God.

The psalmist tells us in Psalm 103:13, 14 that God pities those who fear Him, because He knows we are dust. He knows our limitations and weaknesses. He stands ready to help us, as we fear Him and follow Him. Then, God can bless this dust that is me and make me into the person He designed me to be.

Anyone who doesn't fear God and is trying to make something of themselves on their own, their way, is foolish. They are trying to make strong, powerful dust. That is impossible for any human to do. Yes, you can have a strong personality. You can have big muscles and be in shape. You can be rich. However, you are still dust. One day they will be able to sweep what is left of your body up in a pile, unless Jesus comes before that day. That is why we can't put all of our efforts into physical things. The soul and the spirit are where our real self-esteem should come from. It boils down to this dust having a meaningful relationship with the one who formed us from dust.

Then, one day when we leave this body of dust, God will give us a heavenly body, and we will live forever with Him in Heaven, if we know Christ as Lord and Savior. Isn't God good? He takes dust and makes something beautiful and eternal. He makes us to be able to know Him and experience His joy and peace and love. In Him we are completed dust.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 104-106.
