Compassion and Discretion
As believers, we are to become like Christ in every aspect of our lives. We are to be gracious and full of compassion. We are to lend to others in need. All the while we are to act righteously and to use godly discretion in the process.(Psalm 112:4,5) In other words, it is possible to be a gracious person, who is full of compassion, without being unwise about our decisions about how to help those with whom we come in contact.
I like what these two verses say because we have many times that we are confronted with difficult decisions. It is like being in darkness, and we can't see which way to go. The righteous person, who prays and seeks the Lord, will have light arise in his life, so that he can see how to proceed. In fact, as we fear the Lord and receive His wisdom, we have the discretion to know when to lend and when not to lend. We know how to show compassion and to be gracious in a godly way.
Being like Jesus is having righteous compassion. Jesus never promoted or condoned sin. However, He was quick to lend to others and to come to their aid in times of need. When we need to have His heart and His mind, so that we can be like Him, all we need to do is to call on Him, and He will make our way light and fill our hearts with His compassion.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 113-116.
