God's Mercy and Protection
David had more than his share of enemies and problems, partly because of his position as the king of Israel and partly because of his sins. However, he knew that he could not solve his problems himself. He needed God's mercy and protection.(Psalm 57:1) We can all learn from David's heart and faith.
No one is perfect. We all make mistakes and sin. We need God's mercy. I like the definition of mercy that says it is God giving us less punishment than we deserve. God often does that whether we ask or not, because He is a merciful Father toward His children. However, David asked on the right basis. He was trying to trust God. That was his heart's desire. Therefore, he was asking God to be merciful when he messed up. I know we can all relate to that, but we must put our focus on living each day by trusting God alone.
Then, when we have troubles we stop from trying to take them into our own hands and solve them our way. We step close to God and abide in the "shadow" of His wings, so He can lead us and protect us. This is such a tender picture of the compassion and protection of God. We read this analogy several times in the Bible. David knew the loving protection of God, and each of us who knows Him can experience this same relationship with Him. Then, we wait until the calamities have "passed by." God is so good. He brings us through to the other side of the problems, so we can look back and see how He took care of us and trust Him more.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 58-60.
