Too Little, Too Late

One of the unfortunate characteristics of being human is that often we wait until a problem or a crisis before we act. Then, it is sometimes impossible to change the situation. The saying is that what we do is "too little, too late." What a sad state of affairs. Why does that happen so often?

Many people are ruled by the flesh. I am not sure of a good classical definition of the flesh, but I always say that it is all of our human drives and desires, which are unaided by the Holy Spirit. These drives and desires lead us to opt for pleasure, instead of pain. They lead us to postpone things, instead of getting things done early. Also, the tendency is to run away from conflict and stress. When you put all of these together, you begin to see where "too little too late" comes from. We put off doing something, because we do not want any conflict, and it would take some work to fix it. Therefore, we do nothing until it is too late.

This happens to Christians and non-Christians alike if we do not follow the Spirit, and we are not willing to deny the flesh, so we can do the right thing. The shame of it is that it leads to much failure, family problems, financial problems, and sorrow. Then, one day we will have to stand before the Lord and tell Him why we did "too little, too late." That will be a painful talk, because we will have no excuses.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Samuel 22-25.
