Making a Serious Mistake

When David was fleeing from King Saul, he stopped at the Nob to see the priest, Abimelech. He asked him for some food for his men and for a sword. Abimelech was able to give him some bread, the the sword of Goliath. However, while he was there, David saw Doeg the Edomite, and he knew it would cause trouble in the future. Doeg was faithful to Saul, and he knew he would report what he saw to the king. Sure enough, when Saul was ranting about who really supported him, Doeg showed his loyalty by recounting how Abimelech had aided David. The result was that Abimelech and all of his household and the priests at Nob were killed. Can you imagine how David felt when he heard about these murders? He felt responsible for their deaths, and rightly so. His mistake had led to the loss of life of innocent people. What a tragedy. He should have warned Abimelech or done something to protect the people at Nob, but he did nothing.

We make mistakes all of the time, don't we? Some mistakes are large and serious while some are small. They all have consequences, though. The serious mistakes have serious consequences, and we will be held accountable for the results. That is why it is so important for us to follow the Lord, and allow Him to guide us away from making those bad mistakes. However, once we find that we have made a huge mistake, we should do everything possible to correct the situation and keep the worst consequences from developing. We must not just do nothing. When a mistake ends in death, divorce, or other disasters, there is little we can do to avoid the consequences, but we should still confess our sin, and do what we can to handle it as God would have us to.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Samuel 26-28.
