Looking For Loopholes
A long time ago I heard a joke about W C Fields. He was a comedian years ago, and he was not a believer. In fact, I think he tried to get a lot of his laughs by pretending to be drunk and talking about immorality. The story was told about him being on his death bed. Once when another person walked into the room, they were very surprised to find him reading the Bible. They asked him why he was reading the Bible, and he supposedly replied, "Looking for loopholes." In a way that is funny, but to me, it is very sad. He had lived his life rebelling against God, so he had to do something. Instead of just submitting to Jesus by faith, he was looking for another way out.
I have spoken to many people like this. They read the Bible, but they read it looking for loopholes. They do not read with eyes of faith, but with skepticism. They pick out verses they like, and they ask God to do those things for them, even though they don't really believe in God. They overlook the ones they do not like. All along they justify themselves by what they find in the Bible and what they see in other people. I am afraid these folks will get a rude awakening when they die. There are no loopholes. It is either trusting Jesus as Lord or nothing. Anything else would be a lie, because Jesus is Lord of all. Why would He let us get by with less than bowing to Him in faith?
Tomorrow, I intend to read Amos 4-6 and Revelation 7.
