A Fantastic Sermon, Using Only A Few Words
Boy, did we have a great Bible study with the men this morning at 5 AM! We really dove into the account of Jesus resurrecting the widow's son in Nain. It always energizes me to see how the guys love the Lord and His Word. They love to chew on it and apply it to their lives.
This morning we agreed that this event was a turning point in the ministry of Jesus. It was a wondrous miracle to restore life to a dead man, but the true wonder was the message it delivered to the huge crowd following Jesus and the ones following the funeral procession. All Jesus said was 4 words (7 in English), but it was a fantastic sermon. He showed His love for widows and those who could not take care of themselves. He showed His authority over death, and His power to restore life. He gave a perfect picture of what happens when we come to know Him, we pass from death to life. He did not have to say, "I am the Resurrection and the Life." He showed it in a dramatic way.
Then, everyone who saw this miracle and the multitudes who heard by word of mouth had to decide if they would trust Jesus as a prophet or as the Messiah, God with us. They could no longer be neutral. This one event allowed the truth about Jesus to spread to the entire Jewish people and to many folks around that region. God made it clear that Jesus was His Only Son, the God-Man who had been sent to show people God by His words and actions. Jesus was drawing the people to make a personal decision about Him.
The same is true today. We have the Bible, which has many of Jesus' sermons and miracles as well as the rest of God's Word. We have the Spirit convicting us of sin, righteousness, and judgment. We have the witness of God called preachers, teachers, and missionaries. The Lord is calling the whole world to decide about Jesus. We don't need another sermon of words. We have the compassion and power of God displayed in Jesus' actions. We see the power of God to change lives today. Each of us must decide who Jesus is? Is He the Lord or not? There are no other real choices. I pray that you will see Jesus' sermon about Himself in this story and bow to Him as Lord of your life.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Amos 1-3 and Revelation 6.
