Bringing Down the Proud
One of the truths that we all need to learn well is that the ways of the people of this world are almost always the opposite of God's ways. Of course, that is why, as Christians, we must not be conformed to this world. In fact, when we see how the world does things, we need to automatically do the opposite, unless the Lord shows us otherwise in His Word or as we pray. Because of this truth, God comes against the people of this world to try to get them to conform to His righteousness.
Isaiah was a great prophet who did not just prophecy to God's people, but to the other nations in the area as well. His prophecy to Tyre was about their pride. (Isaiah 23:9) He told them that the Lord had purposed to bring to dishonor the pride of all glory, to bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth. He did this by destroying their prosperous economy built upon trading by sending ships all over the world. God can bring down any country or any person who operates in pride.
God is the Only One who has any right to be proud of Himself and all that He has done and is doing. However, God doesn't boast about Himself as we boast. God operates in a very humble way. He loves everyone, and He associates with people of very low estate. He is willing to do any action to benefit mankind. Nothing is below Him, even dying on a cross. Yes, God is very great, but His emphasis is not on Himself, but on others.
That is why He works to bring to dishonor the pride of all glory. When He sees people that take the glory for themselves, when He has given them all of the abilities and intelligence they have, He has to bring them back to reality. He takes them down a notch or two, so they will be forced to see that He alone is worthy of praise. He will bring into contempt all people who are honorable, but they do not give Him the credit for their accomplishments. Therefore, we need to stay away from all pride.
