Doubting God's Ability
We all have doubts. Our doubts can be good or they can be bad. If we doubt the strength of a ladder to hold us up, so that we go and get a stronger ladder, that is good doubt. If we doubt we can cross the street without getting run over, so we stay safely on the side of the road, that is good doubt. However, the worst kind of doubt we can have is to doubt the ability of God to do anything that is His will.
Elisha proclaimed God's message in the midst of a severe famine in Samaria. He told the people that food would be abundant and inexpensive the next day, but one of the king's officers doubted God's ability to do that. (II Kings 7:2) He said, "Look, if the Lord would make windows in heaven, could this thing be?" Elisha responded that he would see it with his eyes, but he would not eat of it because of his doubts. This should be a powerful message for us.
Of course, we are very unwise and foolish if we think that God is limited in any way from doing what is good and right which is according to His will. However, I am afraid that some of us still doubt His ability to work in the hearts of people or to work in the circumstances of things that are going on around us. When we doubt God like that we are like the king's officer. It will still happen, but we are not likely to benefit from it, because of our doubts.
Instead, we should trust God to be able and live by faith in His power every day. After all, without faith, it is impossible to please God. (Hebrews 11:6) The opposite is very true, too. God is so pleased when we do have faith in Him that He will show us His ability and bless us in the process. Therefore, let's watch out for the wrong kind of doubt and eliminate it from our lives completely.
