Walking in the Ways of Our Fathers

God has designed the family as a very powerful force for raising children. God knew that children need a mother and a father, if at all possible. This gives each child a balance of nurture and correction from both of the parents. God meant for the father to be a very strong guiding influence on his children. Fathers are to teach their children by what they say and what they do.

We see this in the life of Amon, Manasseh's son. (II Kings 21:21) "He walked in all of the ways that his father had walked' and he served the idols that his father had served, and worshiped them." We have a old saying for that, "like father, like son." This is a foundational issue for all of our culture and our country that we need to consider today.

Our country is not doing well morally these days. Some people want to pass laws to try to get our country back to where it ought to be, but no amount of laws can accomplish that. It must start at the home, and the leader of the home is to be the father. If our people are going to get back to the morals God instituted in His Word for all of us, we need fathers who will raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Of course, there is a role for the church in all of this. The church must be effective in reaching the fathers for Christ and instructing them in their role. Then, the children, both sons and daughters, will begin to live by the commands and principles of God's Word, and we will see the improvement that our country needs. Let's all pray for this to happen soon, because if it doesn't happen quickly, our country might fall the way Israel and Judah fell.
