Instruction and Accountability

None of us know the right thing to do until we are instructed in righteousness. If we are left to follow our flesh or even our common sense, we will end up doing the wrong things. Also, when we do not have anyone to hold us accountable to do the right things, we will end up giving in to the temptation to do the wrong thing. It is just a fact of human nature, we all really need the right kind of instruction and accountability to live according to God's will.

Jehoash was seven years old when he became king of Judah in a time of great turmoil. Since he was so young, he had to have help to rule over the country well. (II Kings 12:2) "Jehoash did what was right in the sight of the Lord all the days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him." He had a good teacher and someone to hold him accountable to do what he was taught, so he was successful. It is the same with us.

God has given us a comprehensive guide to everything we need to know to become a Christian and to live the Christian life. It is called the Bible. It has been translated into our languages, so that anyone can read it and be instructed by it. In addition to studying the Bible God has called teachers and preachers to instruct His people in the ways of God and the will of God according to the Bible.

If we will abide in the Word of God and listen to the teachers God has given us, we will have all of the instruction we need. Then, we need to be in a church family, so we can have close Christian friends who will make sure we are living out our instruction on a daily basis. That is why we have small groups and discipleship  relationships. These things will help ensure we do what is right in the sight of the Lord.
