Perfection Wasted

It is very frustrating for us to have everything going well for us only to mess up and cause everything to come crashing down upon us. We might have a great job, but we get lazy or irresponsible, and so we get fired. It might be that our marriage is going very well, but we allow temptation to cause us to wander, and we end up divorced. See what I mean? Even the best things can be wasted when we sin.

That is what happened to Lucifer. Many scholars believe that this passage in Ezekiel refers to the angel whose name meant "light bearer." (Ezekiel 28:12,14) God told Ezekiel to take up a song of mourning for the king of Tyre, which seems to be Lucifer. God proclaimed that he had the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. He was the anointed cherub who covers, and God had placed him on the mountain of God. He walked in the midst of the stones of fire. Notice that all of this is past tense, because it all came crashing down because of his sin.

Lucifer was a perfect being created by a perfect God. He was the seal of perfection. No one was more perfect than He was. He was full of wisdom, since he had lived in God's presence all of his life. He was perfect in beauty, too, so colorful and bright. He was anointed by the Spirit of God to lead the worship in heaven. He was always walking in the stones of fire. Everything was without blemish.

However, Lucifer became proud of his looks. He became full of himself because of his important position around God's throne. He gave in to the pride, and he thought he was worthy of worship like God. That was his sin. His perfection did not keep him from sinning. It was all his heart, his decision. The same is true for us. We can't blame our sin on our circumstances. It is all up to us to stay close to Christ and keep our heart set on Him, not on ourselves.
