Not asking the Lord for Counsel
We are all busy. We have all kinds of things going on in our lives. We have to make various kinds of decisions every day. It is easy to just do the first thing that comes to our mind. However, that is a recipe for disaster. I am sure we can all vouch for that.
The people of Israel made a very bad decision as they entered the land of Canaan. A group of people from the Gibeonites came and lied, saying they lived in a far away land. (Joshua 9:14) So the men of Israel took some of their provisions, but they did not ask for the counsel of the Lord. Therefore, they made a treaty with them, when God had commanded them to wipe out the peoples of the land.
Our ways are not God's ways and our thoughts are not God's thoughts. (Isaiah 55:8,9) We all need to have that truth planted deeply in our hearts. We need to always stop before we make a decision and before we take action. We need to pray and ask God for His counsel to show us what to do. That is the only wise way to live.
If we don't do this, we can get ourselves into bad situations for which there are no remedies, just like Israel did. If we seek the Lord and we act in the way He leads us and in His timing, we can have the assurance that His ways will lead us correctly for us and our families. That is why I say we must train ourselves to pray before we do anything else and never act without finding God's counsel.
