The Lord Who Sanctifies You
Believers are supposed to be different from unbelievers. I don't just mean that we are not to do the sinful things that others do. The difference is also in the things which God commands that we do all the time. God knows what is best for us, so He has told us how to have the best lifestyle. When we live that way, we will be different.
God told Moses to give the people all kinds of laws to live by that would make them different from other peoples. Each one was important, but some most significant than others. (Exodus 31:13) God told Moses to command the sons of Israel to keep His Sabbaths. The Sabbath was a sign between them and the Lord throughout all their generations, so that they would know that He was the Lord who sanctifies them. We must never forget that today, either.
When we are saved from our sins by trusting Jesus as our Lord and Savior, God sets us apart from sin and sets us apart to Him. We belong to Him, and we are to be like Him. We call this sanctification. It is the process of becoming like Jesus. Jesus was different from the people of this world, and we will be, too.
However, this process is not automatic. We have to strive to learn God's Word and to apply it each day as we walk with Jesus, seeking to become like Him more and more. This is impossible to do on our own. We have to remember that the Lord is the One who sanctifies us. That is why keeping the Sabbath each week and keeping God's other commands is so important. It keeps our focus on the One to Whom we belong.
