Over His Heart
We all know that our heart is the organ God made to pump our blood through our body and keep us alive. It is essential for life. We also speak of the heart as the seat of our emotions, and we refer to loving people with our heart. In the Bible times it was thought of as the seat of our decision making, too. Therefore, people have realized that the heart is at the center of what is really important to us.
These facts make how God designed the breastpiece for Aaron, the high priest, very meaningful. (Exodus 28:29) God designed it so that Aaron would carry the names of the sons of Israel over his heart on the breastpiece, so that when he entered the Holy Place, this would be a memorial before the Lord continually. I think there is a message here.
Aaron and his sons were not just carrying out duties as the priests of God. They were to care for the people and consider how to lead them closer to the Lord all of the time. The same is true for those who serve the Lord today in the ministry. God doesn't set a person apart for ministry to be important, but to humbly care for others.
Our minds are to be set on the Lord first and foremost. It is our relationship with Him that enables any of us to fulfill our calling from the Lord. However, our minds and our hearts should be filled with love for our people and for all people. We should continually call their names before the Lord in prayer and be ready to meet any need at any time.
