No Remorse or Reverence

We have a very serious situation in our culture today in America. People do not have any remorse for their sins. I know there are many reasons for this, including relativism, which teaches there is no absolute truth. However, the lack of remorse shows most people have seared consciences, so they do not feel guilty of sin, and they have no reverence for God or what is holy.

This was the condition of the people of Judah in Jeremiah's day. (Jeremiah 44:10) God told them that they had shown no remorse or reverence. No one had chosen to follow His word or the decrees He gave to the people or to their ancestors before them. That is why God brought such harsh punishment on them, and it is why He could do it to us today.

Remorse is when we feel sorry for doing things that are wrong. Today, we see murderers who show no remorse when they are convicted of taking human life. People feel no remorse for stealing from businesses and cheating people. It seems their whole focus is on how to get away with as much as possible. They are not touched by the conviction of the Spirit, because their hearts are so hard.

Reverence is when we bow before the Lord, acknowledging that He is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, and we are His creation. It is when we admit that we are nothing compared to God, and He deserves all of our worship. When people do not show reverence for God, it is very hard for them to come to accept Christ as Lord and Savior, the One who died and arose for their sins. This is why we need to pray for a great awakening in our country today, a return of remorse and reverence.
