The Spirit of the Lord

There are a lot of misconceptions about the Spirit of the Lord. Many people just think of Him like a force or a ghost, since the King James Version of the Bible called Him the "Holy Ghost." He is not a ghost. He is a Person, the third person of the Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is God acting in this world to carry out the work of God in God's way, so He is very important.

Jephthah was one of the judges of Israel. His story is very interesting, but he would not even be mentioned in the Bible, if the Spirit of the Lord had not come "upon him." (Judges 11:29) When that happened, he went throughout the land of Gilead and Manasseh, including Mizpah in Gilead, and from there he led an army against the Ammonites. The Spirit's direction and power enabled Jephthah to win a great victory.

Today, every Christian has the Holy Spirit. He is "in us" forever, not just "upon us" for a particular time to do God's will. Therefore, we have the same power that Jephthah had to win His victory. In fact, it was the Spirit's power that raised Jesus from the dead, so that great power resides in us 24/7. With His great power and direction there is nothing we can't do that is God's will for us.

So, are we listening to the Spirit of the Lord? Are we doing what He tells us to do? If we are not, we are failing God, and we are failing those around us. We should go forth every day in the power of the Spirit. We should be victorious in doing God's will every day. We will see God work in our lives and in the lives of others, if we will allow the Spirit to guide us and empower us. Let's do it!
