Places of Refuge

I can't imagine killing another human being. Yes, I know that in war or in self-defense it is necessary at times. However, it would be a traumatic experience even then. Then, if I killed someone by accident in a car wreck or in another type of accident that would be very terrible, too. I am sure the family of the person who was killed would have all types of questions and be very upset. It would just be a difficult situation.

That is why the Lord instructed Moses to set up "cities of refuge" in the Promised land. (Joshua 20:3) They were cities to which anyone who killed another person accidentally or unintentionally could flee, so they would have a refuge from the relatives of the person seeking revenge for their loved one who was killed. This show us God's heart of compassion and His provision of refuge for those who do not deserve to be harmed.

I believe we all need a safe place of refuge. We need a place of peace where people will love us and understand us. It is inevitable that we will have circumstances in life where we are misunderstood and others get very upset with us. When that happens, we need to take time to cool down before we do anything, so we won't do the wrong thing. Yes, we need places of refuge.

However, for Christians, the Lord is our Refuge. He is our Strong Tower. We can and should run to Him, when we need protection and understanding. God cares, and He will always listen to us. He will show us His love, and He will show us how to love others and treat them as we want to be treated ourselves. I pray we all know the Lord is our Refuge, and we will run to Him as our primary place of refuge in life.
