No Yeast Offered to God
There are many powerful symbols in the Bible. When we read the Bible we notice them all the way through. Often, we read about the same symbol over and over, because the Lord wants it to be stuck in our mind. Light is a symbol of good, while darkness represents evil. Salt shows the need to preserve the truth and righteousness, like they used salt to preserve meat. Then, there is yeast. All through the Scripture yeast is a symbol of sin. It represents the fact that sin is powerful and it spreads through our life and through groups of people rapidly, if we do not watch out. (Leviticus 2:11) The book of Leviticus even prohibited any yeast being a part of any grain offering given to the Lord, and it was never to be burned in a burnt offering. God doesn't want us to have anything to do with sin, even with a small amount of sin, because of how it grows and spreads.
I pray that we have learned this lesson in our lives today. We can't compromise with sin. If we allow a little sin into our life, it will not stay little. It will grow, and it will have the power to change things in our life, like yeast changes a lump of dough. Therefore, we must clean out any sins by confessing them quickly before their influence grows. (I John 1:9) This is true for individuals and for churches, too. However, there is a reference to yeast in the New Testament that is not associated with sin. (Matthew 13:33) Jesus said in a parable that the Kingdom of God should be like leaven. Get the picture? We should not let sin spread, but we should spread the gospel, so that all of our culture is lifted up by the power of God and delivered from the power of sin. Yes, the gospel is much more powerful than sin, and it can spread just as fast, if we are faithful to share it in the power of the Spirit. Just look at the book of Acts. The whole inhabited world heard the gospel of Jesus Christ within one generation of Jesus dying and rising again for our salvation. We need to take this to heart and allow the Lord to use us to spread Kingdom to everyone around us.
