Sin's Slippery Slope

It is impossible for us to decide to decide to commit just a little sin. Sin grows. It gets worse and worse. Once we start down that wrong path, it is a slippery slope that leads us farther and farther from the Lord and His way. We can see this happen as we look back on the nation of Israel after the 10 northern tribes split off from Judah. Jeroboam became their king, and he made two golden calves for the people to worship. He was afraid if they went back to the Temple, they would want to reunite with Judah. From that point Israel went down until Ahab became the king. (I Kings 16:31) He not only sinned in the way of Jeroboam, but he married the daughter of the king of Sidon. Her name was Jezebel, a word we use for an evil woman even today. Then, Ahab served Baal and worshiped him instead of the One True God.  We are all susceptible to this slippery slope of sin.

When we sin our heart gets hard toward the things of the Lord. If we compromise what we know to be right, and we enter into sin on a regular basis, our heart becomes harder and harder. Every sin makes it easier to sin again, because our conscience is seared, so we can't feel the guilt and pain as much. Then, even if we are believers, we can get so hard and so far from the Lord that we forget what the Lord did for us when He saved us.(II Peter 1:9) Of course, the Holy Spirit is convicting the believers of their sins, but His voice gets softer and softer, while Satan's voice and the appeal of this world gets louder and louder. The only way to stop this is to confess our sins, repent of them, and return to the Lord fully. After that, we must do whatever it takes to stay close to Him and to stay away from the first sin that could lead us down sin's slippery slope again.
