Passing the Torch

David was king over Israel for 40 years. It was a struggle and a joy to be the leader of God's people. God promised that He would bless David's house, so that he would have a descendant on the throne of Israel as long as they remained faithful to Him. That was a precious promise to David. What a blessing from God! David had announced that his son, Solomon, would be the king after him. However, that did not happen without having to put down a couple of attempts by his brothers to take the throne from him. Finally, Solomon was anointed as king and sat on the throne of David. (I Kings 1:48) David blessed the Lord, the God of Israel, for granting one to sit on his throne, as He had promised. This gave David a special sense of satisfaction to be able to see it with his own eyes, too. May we all have similar type of blessing.

What will happen after we die and go to heaven? How will our family carry on what we have started? I imagine we all think about this at one time or another. It can be a source of much frustration, or it can be a great joy for us. The frustration comes when we do not see God's plan being worked out in the lives of our children and successors as we thought it would be. None of us wants to see what we worked so hard to achieve crumble in just a short time. Instead, we want to see God's promises fulfilled and God's plan carried out in His power. Of course, it is a great blessing to see that happen with our own eyes before we die. What a joy to have godly, responsible children! What a blessing to see those who will come after us as we pass the torch to the next generation. I believe this should be a matter of daily prayer for each of us.
