Lack of Restraint

Our human nature leads us away from the ways of the Lord. We are curious about new things, like Eve was in the Garden of Eden before she ate the forbidden fruit. We are tempted by things that appeal to the lusts of our human nature. We drift toward a lack of restraint. The tendency is to go ahead and say that anyone can do whatever he or she wants to do with no restraint. That is not God's way. In fact, God reacts against a lack of restraint in a society to try to get people to see the error of this path. In King Ahaz's reign in Judah, he brought about a lack of restraint in the culture. (II Chronicles 28:19) Because of this and the fact that he was very unfaithful to God, God humbled Judah. I believe God is consistent, and He will humble America if we continue down the road of lack of restraint and unfaithfulness to Him which we see today.

Leaders have a great influence over the people they lead. This is true in any country or any context. If the leader promotes a lack of restraint, the people will see this and begin to follow. Soon, the norms of the culture are completely changed. We see this all around us today in what is happening with marriage and sexual identity. Our society is being lead by our leaders to do whatever people want to do. Absolute morality is a thing of the past. In fact, people who hold to God's values and His ways are called "haters." We are cast in the light of being against people with whom we disagree. This is not true, but it is the way they lead the people to be unfaithful to God's will. God could very well decide to humble America as He did Judah by bringing us down financially or by causing the order in our society to fall apart. I pray this does not happen, but I fear it will, if we do not begin to see revival and a turning back to God's ways soon.
