Being Headstrong
In America we put a premium on being free and doing just what we want to do. We tend to be fiercely independent, at least, many of us. We think it is good to be "headstrong," determined to get things done our way, not really listening to others. This is a terrible quality to have when it comes to our relationship with God. It led Israel and Judah into all kinds of problems in Ezekiel's days, and it is no different for believers today. (Ezekiel 5:7) Let me show us just what God told them, so we won't make the same mistakes.
It is possible for us, as Christians, to be even more headstrong than the non-Christians around us. We think we know what is right, having learned from our parents and from the church. However, being headstrong about things causes us to miss where we are wrong, so we can drift away from the truth by being willful. Since we think we know what is right, we can refuse God's guidance from His Word and the Holy Spirit. We can ignore God's instructions, so that we get far off the straight and narrow way He has for our lives. When we do that things get rocky. We can get upset with God, and we can rebel against Him for punishing us. Then, we can sink into the gutter like the people all around us, because we insist on being headstrong and willful. so we must get our own way. I pray that will never happen to any of us, but it could, so beware.
