How Great Your Faithfulness
One of my favorite passages in the Bible is found in Lamentations. It is a fantastic affirmation of God's mercies and love in our times of pain and discouragement. Jeremiah had seen the city he loved, Jerusalem, completely destroyed and the temple torn down. He had witnessed so many people starving to death and the atrocities that go with such an event. His heart was broken. However, in the midst of it all, He knew the Lord, too. He knew that the loyal love of God couldn't run out and His merciful love couldn't have run dry. He knew they were created new every morning, just so our needs could always be met. He affirmed the great faithfulness of God even in his trials. Then, Jeremiah testified to his lasting commitment to God and that His hope was in Him alone. (Lamentation 3:22-24) These verses have comforted me so many times. I pray that all of us will make these truths personal, so we can be assured of the great faithfulness of our God.
The Hebrew word used here is "chesed." It means God's covenant love for His people. It encompasses all of His loyalty and mercy. It is used in the plural form to let us know that His love and mercy are so multifaceted that they are ready to meet any challenge we have in our lives by His power. His mercies are new every morning! No matter how loving and merciful God was to us yesterday, He has plenty of new ones today. Therefore, we should never give up on God. We should exclaim, "Great is Your faithfulness" every day. We should affirm that He is our One and Only Lord and Savior and that all of our hope comes from Him. That is why Jeremiah could live through such pain, and the same loyal love and merciful love is there for us now. How great Your faithfulness, O God!
