A Two-sided Commitment
Abram, who later became Abraham, was the father of the Jewish people. The Bible also says that he was the father of the faithful, because he put his faith fully in God. All of this began when God came to Abram with a proposal for a two-sided commitment between them. We call it a covenant, but a lot of people do not understand a covenant, so let me explain. God told Abram that He would do certain things, if Abram would make the commitment to do certain things. Therefore, both of them were making a commitment to each other. (Genesis 12:1-3) This is one of the most important covenants in all of history, so let's see what happened then that still has consequences to this day.
God told Abram to do four things that required great faith in God. He told him to leave his country, his family, his father's home, and go to a land that God would show him. He had to leave everything he had known and go to a place that he did not know. He had to do this simply by trusting God to lead him. Abram did his part. God's commitment was to make Abram a great nation, even though his wife was barren. He would bless him and make him famous. God made the commitment to bless those who blessed Abram and to curse those who cursed him. Finally, God guaranteed that all of the families of the Earth would be blessed by Abram. Wow, what promises! What happened? Abram's people, the Jews, still live in the land. God has blessed them and Abraham is very famous all over the world. God has protected the Jews against those who want to harm them, and He has blessed their allies. Finally, He sent Jesus as a descendant of Abraham, and through Jesus all of the families of the Earth can have salvation. In other words, God is still keeping His commitment to Abram all of these years later. That is how faithful God is, when we decide to put our faith in Him and do what He tells us to do.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Genesis 15-17.
