God's Instructions for His Kings
God gives some very specific instructions to His people about the future kings they would have in the land of Canaan. It was vital for them to choose the right men and for those men to lead righteous lives, so that they would have wisdom to lead God's people in the right way. I want to focus on part of these instructions today. Each king was to personally write out a copy of the law of God, as given by Moses, so that he would know it, read it the rest of his life, and observe to do all of it. (Deuteronomy 17:18,19) I think all of the kings broke some of these rules, and many of them disregarded all of them. That is one big reason that Israel departed from the Lord. Just think what could have happened then, and what could happen today if every ruler would follow this instruction.
It would be fantastic to have every king and president to write out by hand a copy of God's laws. It would leave the mark of them on their minds to not only hear the laws, but to read them, and to write them. Researchers tell us that we remember much more if we will do all three of these things. Then, if they would use that personal copy to read the Word of God over and over, it would be even more imprinted on their hearts and minds. It would lead them to have a healthy fear of the Lord, which is needed by all powerful people. It would also cause them to see why they need to obey all of God's ways and His statutes. Wouldn't it be great, if every one of our laws was based on God's Word and His laws? It would transform our nation, just as it would have been a blessing in Israel. I know that we would not follow the ceremonial laws which applied to Israel and pointed to Jesus, but if we followed the moral laws, it would transform our nation.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Deuteronomy 18-21.
