For the Lord is Good!
We all know that the word good is so overused that it is too vague to convey much meaning. What do we mean when we say something is good? Well, we mean simply that it is something positive, instead of something negative. However, we would have to be more descriptive to know just why we think it is good. That is why when the psalmist told us that the Lord is good he gave us two very specific reasons for that goodness. (Psalm 100:5) I believe we all would agree that He is "very" good, when we understand these two qualities.
The Lord has a steadfast love that endures forever. His love never changes. His love is always complete and unconditional toward all people. We can count on that. However, that does not mean that all people trust Christ and have a personal relationship with Him that secures their eternal salvation. The Lord loves everyone, but not everyone loves Him back to the point of repentance from their sins and faith in Him, as Lord. Once we make that decision, and we come to know Him, we are secure in Christ, because of this steadfast, covenant keeping love.
The Lord has faithfulness that reaches to all generations. He has always been faithful, and He will always be faithful to all people. We do not have to be concerned about Him changing His promises or His ways of doing things, because He is faithful. He will never leave us or forsake us, because He has given us His word that He will not do that. Again, we can be secure in His faithfulness.
Now, that is being very "good." In fact, the Lord is so good that He deserves all of our thanks and praise every day, as we sing His praises and show forth His love to all people.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalm 101-103.
