The Sound of the Holy Spirit

Most of the time we never hear or see the Holy Spirit. However, there are occasions when we do hear Him. (II Samuel 5:24) David experienced one of those times when he inquired of God about attacking the Philistine army. God said to wait for the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees before he attacked. That was a sign that God had gone before them to strike down the enemy. What can we learn from this? Let me explain.

The word "spirit" means breath or wind. Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3 that we can't see the wind, but we can see the effects of the wind. He was giving an analogy for how the Holy Spirit works in our lives. We can know He is there by what He does in us and through us. On the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit came with a sound like a rushing mighty wind. It was not real wind, but that was the sound to let the disciples know His presence with them. Either way, God works to show us the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, because His work is essential if we are to do the will of God. I pray that all of us will be able to be assured of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives as evidence of God's salvation and His working in us to make us like Jesus.

Tomorrow, I intend to read II Samuel 6-8.
