Our Day of Rest

We have seven days in a week, because God created the world in six days, and on the seventh day He rested. We are to do our work in six days and to rest on the seventh day, too. It is not just a command, but it is holy to the Lord, and it is a sign of our covenant with Him as His people. (Exodus 31:15,17) In the Old Testament time the people of Israel were to keep the Sabbath on the last day of the week. Now, we keep it on the first day of the week because Jesus rose again on Sunday. That way it is a sign of the New Covenant we have with Him.

God was serous about His people keeping the Sabbath. If anyone worked at their usual work on the Sabbath, they were to be put to death. I would say God means what He says wouldn't you? Today, we live under the New Covenant of grace, but there are still great consequences if we fail to keep our Sabbath day holy to the Lord. After all, it reflects our relationship with Him. What kind of relationship do we have, if we will not give Him His day to worship Him and to rest from our regular work? I hope that each of us will appreciate the meaning of the Sabbath and keep it holy for our good and for His glory.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Exodus 32-35.
